Samson – Big & Small: A Comparison

Our Summer Student Evan Maher has done a wonderful job of designing and building a brick model of Samson the BC Forest Discovery Centre’s 1910 Vulcan locomotive.

The following is a brief comparison of the “Big & Small” versions.

Big Samson
Construction Date: 1910
Builder: Vulcan Iron Works, Wilkes-Barre PA
Model: Class C6, 0-4-0 ST
Gauge: narrow (36” / 914 mm)
Pieces: lots
Weight: 36,000 lbs (18 tons).
Dimensions: Height—9’8”, Length—20’8”.
Power Source: Diesel fired boiler, originally coal.
Status: Operational. Not for sale in the Gift Shop.

Small Samson
Construction Date: 2021
Builder: Evan Maher, Duncan BC.
Model: Class C6, 0-4-0 ST
Gauge: 1:45 scale (37.5 mm)
Pieces: 784
Weight: 1.1 lbs (492 grams).
Dimensions: Height—1 1/6” (8 cm), Length– 1’ 2 1/6” (36 cm).
Power Source: Manual (hand push).
Status: Waiting for decals. Building instructions to be sold in the Gift Shop.
